Sustainable construction is, of course, important, but what happens after the kitchen has been renovated and you continue with your day-to-day? Do you slip back into old habits, using products that are not only harmful to you, but also to the environment? We’ve become very aware of what we use, how we use it and what the consequences are, and rightly so. By making tiny little adjustments in our daily lives, we are able to minimise our carbon footprint and help our environment. This is not only important for our health, but it is also important for the future of the planet and future generations. In this article, we highlight products that are essential and will fit your newly renovated sustainable kitchen like a glove. Let’s help make the world a better place, one small step at a time. Keep it Fresh with Beeswax Wraps The use of clingwrap has come with us and passed on from one generation to the next. Don’t you think its about time to stop it in its tracks? Plastic is harmful to the environment and a complete waste. Instead, make your own beeswax wraps to keep leftovers and other foods fresh and dry in the fridge. Dodge the Tupperware, Switch to Glass Plastic Tupperware is another one of those things that have been around for ages. Did you know that using plastic for saving leftovers is not safe? It's also an industry that is very harmful to the environment. Instead of using plastic, switch to glass. Glass storage is a sustainable option that won’t stain and it is safe. Wipe it Off with Cloth Oh, the ever-present paper towel and serviette. Can you even begin to imagine how many paper towels and serviettes end up on landfills? Exactly. It's like the unwanted gift that continues to give while taking from forests. Instead of using paper, switch to cloth towels. Not only is it more efficient, but it can also be used for years, and not only once. Stick to French Press There are a lot of coffee snobs out there who refuses to drink anything but filter coffee. But others may argue that French Press is much better in every single way. Not only does a coffee machine mess, but you use paper filters every time you make a brew. Instead of buying all those filters, switch to making your cuppa joe in a French Press. It tastes better, and it’s better for the environment. Get a Compost Bin Finally, your newly renovated sustainable kitchen will be incomplete without a compost bin. When you plan your remodel, be sure to include it in your plans. This will allow you to throw any scraps of food, peels and so on in the compost bin. Instead of wasting and throwing food away, place a compost bin underneath the sink where you can throw any compostable items to be re-used in your garden.
